Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is characterized by persistent pain associated with trophic and vasomotor changes in and around a joint, usually to a degree that is disproportionate to the extent of injury. These symptoms, however, are consistent with those of many other clinical entities. How, then, are timely diagnosis and treatment achieved?
