Diabetic ketoacidosis should be rare in patients who have had good training in diabetes management. Nonetheless, ketoacidosis can occur in type I diabetes that is undiagnosed or newly diagnosed and in response to severe infection, cardiac disorders, depression, or other illness or stress in either type I or type II diabetes. Drs Bell and Alele review the causes, characteristics, prevention, and treatment of ketoacidosis, as well as the complications that can accompany it.
