When a child has trouble finishing tasks, won't stay seated during meals and classes, and talks impulsively, parents and teachers may quickly conclude that the problem is attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the answer is medication. But children who do not have ADHD sometimes exhibit these same behaviors, as do children with learning disorders, family problems, or emotional difficulties. The authors describe the complexities and the rewards of taking a comprehensive approach to diagnosis in children with behavioral difficulties.
