, DO
Pages 243-254 | Published online: 30 Jun 2015

PREVIEW

Although savage attacks by pit bulls and wild animals are a popular subject of tabloid news headlines, less severe animal bites are a more common concern. A bite from a pet or even a human may send some persons to the emergency department or their primary care physician's office. Immediate treatment is the key to preventing potential infectious complications. This article discusses common bite wounds and reviews the recommended guidelines for wound management, including prophylaxis for tetanus and rabies.
