Acute red eye

Differentiating viral conjunctivitis from other, less common causes

Acute red eye is a common problem seen in primary care practice. Viral conjunctivitis, one of the most prevalent causes, often can be diagnosed and treated in this setting, although in some cases referral to an ophthalmologist is needed.
