Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder

Over the last 10 years, the number of prescriptions written for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder has increased phenomenally. The most commonly prescribed drugs are stimulants, especially methylphenidate hydrochloride, dextroamphetamine, and pemoline. But even when cognitive focus is improved with pharmacotherapy, other issues, such as social skills training, may need to be addressed. A multimodal approach to treatment, including behavior therapy, education, and neurofeedback, is optimal.
