Recognizing peripheral neuropathy

How to read the clues to an underlying cause

Nearly every day, primary care physicians see patients complaining of numbness, pain, weakness, or dizziness. Peripheral neuropathy is often the cause of these and additional symptoms, and systemic disease may be at the root of all the problems. In this article, Dr Morgenlander gives an overview of how to use physical findings, patients' descriptions of their symptoms, and the family and medical history to confirm a diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy and narrow the search for an underlying cause.
