Strongyloides stercoralis is a ubiquitous nematode infecting millions of people worldwide. Physicians who have a high clinical suspicion for strongyloidiasis and who can identify patients at risk are most likely to make a correct diagnosis. Understanding this parasite's life cycle allows clinicians to appreciate the parasite's unique ability to infect the host for decades, to predict the organ systems involved, and to recognize the variety of clinical presentations of strongyloidiasis.
