Each year in the United States, about 100,000 cases of acute hepatitis A and 300,000 cases of hepatitis B are reported. Obviously, development of the vaccines now available for these diseases has been a welcome advancement. The current challenge for physicians is to see that at-risk children and adults undergo vaccination according to recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Dr Dolan summarizes characteristics of the diseases and the vaccines, candidates for vaccination, and doses and schedules for administration.
