Orthotopic liver transplantation has emerged as an important management tool for advanced liver disease, with more than 3,000 liver transplants performed in the United States each year. However, because there are many more candidates for transplants than available donor livers, the selection and timing of patient referral are critical. Dr Luxon reviews the indications and contraindications for liver transplantation and discusses disease-specific guidelines.
