Abstract
Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx and nearby structures. The larynx (often called the Adam's apple) is a chamber in the windpipe, and stretched tightly across it are folds of membrane known as the vocal cords. As air passes over them, the vocal cords vibrate to make sound. The tongue, lips, and teeth turn it into speech. When the area is swollen and irritated, the voice is hoarse, muted, or gone entirely.
