Corticosteroids have many beneficial and sometimes lifesaving short-term therapeutic effects. Unfortunately, they also have problematic and even life-threatening side effects, particularly with long- term use. In this article, Dr van Vollenhoven presents a balanced view of steroid therapy in rheumatic disease, taking into account both ends of the therapeutic spectrum.
