A terrified patient straining for breath is, unfortunately, a fairly common emergency situation encountered by physicians in many settings, from ambulatory care centers to critical care units. Most physicians experienced in recognizing pulmonary edema as the cause have developed their own management scheme rooted in long-held beliefs and personal experiences. However, recent advances, described in this article, challenge traditional therapy and offer more rapid and efficient management.
