Biopsy of the skin

Thoughtful selection of technique improves yield

Skin biopsy is often performed to assess dermatologic manifestations in patients with cutaneous or systemic diseases. With most neoplasms, the biopsy can be performed using a shave technique. Punch or incisional/ excisional biopsy is helpful in cases where possible dermal or subcutaneous invasion requires investigation. As explained by the author, with proper preoperative assessment, skin biopsy is a relatively safe procedure that often enhances our diagnostic acumen and treatment capabilities.
