The role of long-term oxygen therapy for hypoxemia in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is well established. Determining appropriate candidates and the best type of oxygen delivery system for each patient requires a thorough evaluation. In this article, the authors discuss the currently accepted indications for oxygen therapy, the pros and cons of the various types of oxygen supplies and delivery devices, and the requirements for prescribing oxygen therapy.
