Defects that upset the delicate balance of the hemostatic system can cause serious bleeding disorders. Determining the cause of abnormal bleeding can be tricky, but detailed history taking combined with careful interpretation of hemostatic screening tests can provide valuable clues. The authors of this article review the basic mechanisms of hemostasis and discuss clinical and laboratory evaluation of common bleeding disorders.
