Snakebite

Pages 311-312 | Published online: 30 Jun 2015

Abstract

Each year in the United States, about 45,000 people endure a snakebite, about 8,000 of them by a venomous snake. How poisonous the venom is varies among snake species, and how intense the reaction is varies among people. Children and the elderly are likely to have a more intense reaction. But one thing is the same in many cases—the bite could have been avoided.
