PREVIEW

Nonimmunologic skin irritation is a common cause of rashes and eruptions. These skin problems, called irritant contact dermatitis, differ from allergic dermatitis in that no previous exposure to the irritant is necessary. In many cases, the reaction occurs shortly after exposure. While often considered trivial, irritant contact dermatitis can cause serious problems for some patients and is easily confused with other types of dermatitis. Drs Denig, Hoke, and Maibach offer some insights into causes, clinical characteristics, and control.
