Basing treatment decisions on patients' risk level

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding usually requires hospitalization and expensive treatment measures. However, recent clinical data show that some patients who are at low risk for recurrence and severe complications may be treated on an outpatient basis. In this article, Dr Terdiman discusses a new approach to management of this potentially life-threatening condition and presents treatment guidelines now in use at his institution.
