Blood cultures remain the “gold standard” for confirming bacteremia and identifying causative organisms. The yield is maximized when strict procedure guidelines for collection and incubation are followed and laboratory and clinical data are properly correlated. Dr Chien addresses several issues of clinical and technical importance in blood culturing, including indications, aseptic technique, available systems, and special considerations in patients with indwelling catheters.
