Abstract
The scenario is all too familiar. In the middle of a busy day, you receive a call from an insurance company's utilization reviewer who wants to know why your patient is still in the hospital. Calmly, you explain your rationale and the plan for the patient's remaining hospital course. After reflecting on the interaction, you are irritated that a nonphysician representative of an insurance company is questioning your judgment as a physician.
