Since its introduction into clinical practice 25 years ago, echocardiography has become an important component of cardiac evaluation. It can provide accurate, quantitative data in patients with valvular heart disease and thus is particularly useful in diagnosis and follow-up. The authors of this article describe the various types of valvular disease, emphasizing the role of echocardiography in assessment.
