Despite all the recent advances in understanding and treating hypertension, we still have a long way to go in overcoming this insidious problem. The once-steady decline in stroke and heart attack in the United States has dissipated, while the incidence of renal failure and congestive heart failure is gradually increasing. More aggressive detection, evaluation, and treatment of hypertension are needed if we hope to tame this menace.
