Advances in the management of chronic hypertension have made the occurrence of hypertensive crises relatively rare. However, it is likely that most primary care physicians will at some point encounter a patient with critically elevated blood pressure. Dr Bales describes the types and causes of hypertensive crisis as well as appropriate therapy and potential complications that can affect management.
