Increasing numbers of primary care physicians are finding that nasolaryngoscopy is a useful technique for identifying the source of nasopharyngeal or laryngeal complaints. The procedure, which is easy to learn, can be completed in about 15 minutes. The cost of equipment is relatively low, and patient acceptance is high. Best of all, the procedure can yield a wealth of information, thereby avoiding unnecessary workups or delays in treatment. In this article, Drs Hayes and Houston provide an introduction to the basic knowledge and skills necessary to perform direct laryngoscopy.
