Following the clues to neuropathic pain

As the explanation for tormenting sensations in a numb or amputated limb, neuropathic pain is an interesting and initially mystifying phenomenon. But once pain transmission and pathways are understood, the various types and characteristics of the disorder become more clear. In this article, Dr Belgrade reviews how neuropathic pain occurs and outlines features to watch for in history taking and physical examination that clarify the diagnosis. In addition, he presents an algorithm to help primary care physicians formulate a strategy for management.
