Traditional conceptualization and treatment of chronic pain based solely on biologic factors have proved inadequate for patients with complex pain conditions. Drs Weisberg and Clavel explain why and describe a more effective approach that also includes psychological, social, and cultural factors. A case report illustrates this multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment of complex chronic pain.
