Providing primary care for adult patients with mental retardation taxes the medical, emotional, and financial resources of our society. Advanced planning and preparation help clinicians appreciate the patience and compassion needed to provide quality care and establish a rewarding patient-physician relationship. In this article, Dr Councilman provides information to assist clinicians in understanding the challenges and in developing a health maintenance strategy for these patients.
