PREVIEW

Constipation is a symptom, not a disease, and can reflect a vast array of problems, from inadequate fiber intake to colonic motility dysfunction. The authors present a practical summary of steps to take in patient evaluation to rule out secondary causes and establish the type of constipation. Test findings can assist in patient management. The authors also discuss treatment methods to try depending on the underlying cause.
