The spread and sequelae of sexually transmitted diseases pose a serious public health threat. Chlamydia trachomatis infection, which is often asymptomatic, has surpassed syphilis and gonorrhea in prevalence. Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 affect an estimated one third of the world's population. In part 1 of this two-part article, Drs Kirchner and Emmert discuss diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of chlamydial and herpes simplex infections, stressing the importance of discussing sexual issues with patients. Part 2, which focuses on diagnosis and treatment of gonorrhea and syphilis, will appear in the February issue.
