Viral causes of hepatitis are clinically indistinguishable from one another. This can be a problem because appropriate management often depends on the specific virus involved. Fortunately, advances in serologic and molecular testing now allow accurate identification of the viral causes of both acute and chronic hepatitis. In this article, Drs Saab and Martin discuss five important hepatitis viruses—A through E—and explain which tests are most helpful for deciding on management.
