Antiviral therapy in chronic hepatitis can completely eradicate the virus and induce remission of liver disease. To achieve such benefits, however, therapy should be initiated before decompensated liver disease ensues; at that point, liver transplantation is the only available option. In this article, Dr Gordon describes indications for and contraindications to antiviral therapy in chronic hepatitis. He also summarizes relative advantages and drawbacks of the treatment options available at present.
