PREVIEW
Gonorrhea and syphilis remain among the most widespread sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Gonorrhea can result in pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, making detection and treatment imperative. Syphilis can be missed in its earlier stages, and in later stages remains “the great imitator” of other conditions. In this article, Drs Emmert and Kirchner discuss screening, diagnosis, initial and follow-up treatment, and partner notification. Part 1 of this article, on Chlamydia trachomatis and herpes simplex virus infections, was published in the January issue, page 55.
