Although renal replacement therapies have revolutionized the management of renal failure, the morbidity and mortality associated with this condition remain unacceptably high. In this article, Dr Schmitz summarizes recent advances in our understanding of progressive renal insufficiency and discusses practical strategies that may prevent or significantly slow down the progression of kidney damage.
