Osteoporosis causes fractures in more than a million and a half Americans each year. About 80% of these fractures occur in women, often at or shortly after menopause. Can the factors responsible for bone loss at menopause be modified to reduce risks? In this article, Drs McGarry and Kiel explain who should undergo bone density testing, which tests are most helpful, and who should be offered preventive therapy.
