Somatization disorder is the physical manifestation of mental pain. Unlike patients with other chronic conditions, patients with somatization disorder are unlikely to cooperate in, or respond to, their treatment. In this article, Drs Holloway and Zerbe discuss how physicians can distinguish this confounding condition from real physical illness and find a balanced approach to helping the patient without burning themselves out.
