Over the past decade, death rates for many cancers have decreased dramatically. However, the decline in deaths from colorectal cancer has leveled off recently, suggesting a breakdown in preventive strategies. Much can be done to improve this picture. For example, the role of diet and exercise often is not discussed with patients, and regular screening may be postponed or forgotten. In this article, Dr Kuwada discusses what needs to happen in primary care practices if outcomes of colorectal cancer are to continue to improve.
