Contributing factors in resistant hypertension

Many patients are considered to have resistant hypertension when their blood pressure remains elevated despite use of multiple antihypertensive agents. However, the prevalence of the problem is difficult to determine because of differences in diagnostic criteria, physicians' practice patterns, and therapeutic approach. Numerous factors can contribute to treatment resistance, so every patient should undergo a thorough, orderly, and carefully directed evaluation. In this article, Dr Vidt describes such an evaluation.
