Eating disorders in adolescents with type 1 diabetes

Disordered eating behavior is pervasive among adolescents—notably females—with type 1 diabetes mellitus. This article discusses the prevalence of eating disorders in this population, documents key eating attitudes and associated behaviors, and explains some of the long-term diabetic complications that may be linked to moderately or highly disordered eating patterns. Treatment protocols for at-risk adolescent females are also highlighted.
