One of the most common skin disorders in temperate, industrialized nations, atopic dermatitis is clearly a condition that is itching for attention. But while the prevalence of the disorder increases, it remains misdiagnosed and ineffectively treated. In this article, Drs Leicht and Hanggi review the etiology, diagnostic criteria, triggers, associated complications, and treatment of this condition. Research surrounding the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis is also examined.
