Mitral regurgitation, which involves retrograde flow of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium, is a relatively common disorder, particularly in older patients. Numerous causes have been identified, and this valve abnormality should be considered in all patients who have evidence of systolic heart failure. Repair of the valve, rather than valve replacement, now is the procedure of choice for many patients. In this article, Dr Scott reviews physical findings, diagnostic studies, and proactive management of this complex disorder.
