Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can be associated with severe and prolonged symptoms. Diagnosis is often made when patients present with typical symptoms that respond to standard treatments. However, atypical presentations and disease refractory to traditional treatments can be a challenge to diagnose and manage. In this article, Drs Kaynard and Flora discuss the variable presentations, identification, and treatment of this common condition.
