PREVIEW

Although the exact reasons are unknown, several rheumatic diseases are linked with an increased risk of cancer, and some neoplastic disorders produce neuromusculoskeletal manifestations. When treating a patient with rheumatic symptoms, how do you know whether further investigation for possible occult tumors is warranted? Drs Marmur and Kagen explore this unusual association by reviewing current knowledge about pathogenic factors in paraneoplastic diseases and epidemiologic data regarding increased cancer risks in various rheumatic disorders.
