Treatment of major depression has been revolutionized in the last 25 years and has undergone a particularly dramatic transformation in the most recent 10 years. A number of new, safe, and effective medications have been developed to help patients find relief from the disabling—and sometimes devastating—symptoms of depression. This article presents an overview of the pharmacologic options available, considerations for choosing between these options, and suggestions for managing side effects.
