PREVIEW

Not long ago, “moodiness” was considered normal for most youngsters and was endured rather than investigated. But evidence indicates that full-blown depression in children and adolescents is increasing in incidence and often is overlooked as a cause of behavioral and other problems. Primary care physicians play a crucial role in recognizing the condition and encouraging treatment for these children. In this article, Drs Shugart and Lopez discuss the diagnosis and management of major depressive episodes in children and adolescents and highlight differences in childhood and adult depression.
