PREVIEW

Among the many barriers to the control of hypertension are the failure to diagnose high blood pressure in medical offices and hospitals, inadequate treatment regimens, side effects of medications, and poor adherence to the needed lifestyle changes. What is critical in this discussion, however, is the recognition that African Americans tend to be more intensely and negatively affected by some of the barriers to blood pressure control that may concern all hypertensive patients. In this article, the authors describe barriers to achieving control of hypertension and suggest practical ways to overcome these obstacles.
