PREVIEW

The newer, atypical antipsychotics are better tolerated than the older neuroleptics. The intramuscular formulations of these drugs are useful in behavioral emergencies, when oral dosing is impractical. In addition, they provide a smooth transition to oral dosing with the same agent once the acute agitation has been managed. In this article, Dr Citrome discusses patient assessment, selection of an agent, and future possibilities for improved control.
