PREVIEW

As the US population ages, primary care physicians may encounter an increasing number of cases of aspiration pneumonia, both community-acquired and nosocomial infections. Awareness of this disease is important because diagnosis is usually based on clinical findings and initial therapy is primarily empirical. In this article, Drs Johnson and Hirsch discuss the predisposing factors and microbial origins of aspiration pneumonia and review current recommendations for prevention and treatment.
