Obesity has become increasingly prevalent in westernized countries, and in the United States it has reached epidemic proportions. The risks linked to obesity—such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes—make this condition one that deserves time and recognition by primary care physicians. Here, Dr Bray reviews the characteristics that define overweight and obesity, the factors that contribute to the pathogenesis of obesity, and current approaches to its management.
