Diseases of the pericardium, primarily acute pericarditis, are common in primary care. Many cases of acute pericarditis have a benign infectious origin and are self-limited. However, serious causes, including tuberculous and neoplastic diseases, should be considered. In this article, Drs Ross and Grauer highlight the more common causes to consider and review the clinical presentation, evaluation, and treatment of acute pericarditis.
